Koichi Toyama uses his unique sensibility and techniques to create a timeless look from the texture of the wood he has cut. The tray series, each with a different haturi look,
Soban, with its modern twelve-cornered shape and aged appearance, and the Sumikiri-kaku tray variation, which is even more appealing as an everyday companion. The gentle beige-grey colour is created by fine penetrations slightly tinted with acorns.
The soft green glaze is reminiscent of antiquities. Takuji Hayashi's vessels have a warmth and simplicity in their effortless form.
Koichi Toyama's woodwork and Takuji Hayashi's ceramics.
Despite the differences in materials,
the two share a quietness behind their stout style and a presence that blends into the space as if it had always been there.
Please enjoy this exhibition of two artists whose comfortable reticence resonates with each other.

In October, Gallery Grapefruit Juice presents a two-person exhibition by Takuji Hayashi and Asami Sakaki Botanical Laboratory.
Takuji Hayashi works with clay and creates forms using both the potter's wheel and a mould.
He sublimates the influences of old objects and vessels into his own expression, and uses a unique technique of soaking the clay in Tochishibu after firing to create a natural colour in the nuki (penetration).
The soft glaze tones and fine cracked patterns overlapping each other give the works a combination of nostalgia and novelty, and add calmness and depth to dining tables and spaces. The exhibition will feature a number of works, including bowls and oval plates for daily cooking, small plates that are easy to use as serving dishes, and other vessels that add three-dimensional colour to the dining table.
Asami Sakaki Botanical Laboratory produces wildflowers, bonsai and flower containers in spring and summer, and grass ornaments and stone guardians in autumn and winter.
The company places importance on the strength of plants in their simplicity rather than showiness, and expresses the texture and vitality of nature as it is.
The Grass Ornaments and Stone Amulets introduced here are original designs by Asami Sakaki Botanical Institute. They were created with the hope that Sakaki would like them to be displayed not only during the year-end and New Year holidays, but also throughout the following year as a talisman for herself and her place. They are a quiet companion to everyday life, bringing the suppleness and blankness of nature into our daily lives.
The grass ornaments will be available for order for delivery in December, while the zodiac grass ornaments and stone amulets will be on sale immediately.
Soil and grass are different materials, yet deeply connected to human life. Please visit the exhibition space to see the overlapping expressions created by the hands of these two artists.
Takuji Hayashi
Born as the fourth generation of a potter in Seto City, Aichi Prefecture. After studying ceramic techniques in Seto, he built his own kilns in Seto and Hagano. Later moved to Okayama Prefecture, where he continued to make ceramics. He uses both a potter's wheel and a mould, and after firing, he uses a technique where natural colour is impregnated into the nuki (penetration) with tochishibu (a type of astringent woodchip).
Asami Sakaki Botanical Institute
Born in Shizuoka Prefecture, Sakaki Asami established the Asami Sakaki Botanical Institute in 2015 and is currently based in Suwa, Nagano Prefecture. She creates works and exhibitions that utilise plants, such as bonsai, wildflowers and grass ornaments. She continues to create works that are simple yet evoke the suppleness of nature and the workings of life, valuing the sense of finding beauty in "imperfection, distortion and gaps".

- From the HP -
KOHORO Futakotamagawa is opening a solo exhibition by Takuji Hayashi, who makes ceramics in Okayama Prefecture.
This is the second time the exhibition has been held, after four years since 2021.
Among the old ceramics and antiques that have influenced Hayashi, he is particularly fascinated by the old pottery of his birthplace, Seto.
He continues to create pieces that maintain the atmosphere of old pottery and accompany daily life as everyday vessels.
Hayashi uses both a mould and a potter's wheel in his work.
Thinking about the various shapes, expressions, and combinations is part of the fun.
Please enjoy looking at his work, while imagining your dining table in the changing seasons from summer to autumn.
